SS-31 Product Details
🧪 Scientific / Complex Description
Scientific Name: Elamipretide (also known as SS-31, MTP-131, Bendavia)
Sequence: D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂
(Dmt = 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine)
Synonyms: SS-31, Elamipretide, MTP-131, Bendavia
Molecular Formula: C₃₀H₄₉N₉O₅
Molecular Weight: ~639.8 Da
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide that selectively targets cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Through binding and stabilization of cardiolipin, SS-31 helps preserve mitochondrial structure and function during oxidative stress. Research indicates that SS-31 may enhance electron transport efficiency, reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS), and protect against mitochondrial-driven apoptosis.
It has been investigated in cell and animal studies for its cytoprotective and mitochondrial-stabilizing properties, particularly in research related to cardiovascular health, neurodegeneration, metabolic dysfunction, and age-related mitochondrial decline.
🔬 Simple / Everyday Explanation
SS-31 is a tiny lab-made peptide that scientists study because it goes straight to the mitochondria, which are like the “power plants” inside cells. It attaches to a special fat inside mitochondria called cardiolipin, helping the mitochondria stay stable and work better when the cell is under stress.
In simpler terms:
-
It protects the power plants of the cell from damage.
-
It may help cells make energy more efficiently.
-
Researchers are interested in it for studying things like aging, energy loss in cells, and how stress affects cell health.
