Synonyms: Acetyl Octapeptide-3, SNAP-8
Molecular Formula: C₄₁H₆₇N₁₇O₁₆
Molecular Weight: ~888.1 Da
SNAP-8 is a synthetic octapeptide developed as a mimetic fragment of SNAP-25, a protein involved in neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction. By competitively binding to the SNARE complex, SNAP-8 has been studied for its ability to reduce vesicle fusion and neurotransmitter release, ultimately modulating muscular contraction at the cellular level.
In research settings, SNAP-8 is investigated as a biological modulator of neuromuscular signaling, making it a popular peptide for studies on cellular stress responses, neurotransmission, and muscle relaxation pathways. It is considered a safer, more cost-effective analog to other neuropeptide modulators due to its smaller size and stability in lyophilized form.
🔬 Simple / Everyday Explanation
SNAP-8 is a small laboratory-made peptide that scientists study because it can mimic part of a natural brain protein (SNAP-25). This protein normally helps nerve cells send signals that make muscles contract. SNAP-8 works by blocking some of that signaling process, so muscles don’t contract as strongly.
Because of this, researchers are especially interested in it for studying how muscles move and relax, and how nerve signals can be controlled at the smallest cellular level. In simple terms:
-
It’s like a “switch dimmer” for nerve signals.
-
Instead of completely stopping them, it turns down the intensity.
-
This makes it useful in laboratory research on things like cell communication, muscle tension, and stress responses in cells.
